Buckle up, it's a long one...
He was fine at the rehearsal dinner, but once we got back to the hotel, things changed. We went to bed and then woke up to him uncontrollably crying, hyperventilating, wheezing, and seal coughing. He was struggling to get full breaths, but that was more due to the fact that he was crying so hard. We got him calmed back down, but his breathing stayed loud with a lot of "seal" coughing. Luke and I made the decision to take him into the ER to get it figured out. It wasn't right and he was obviously not well. At 12:10am Saturday morning, we loaded him up and took him down to Skaggs Hospital (yes, Skaggs... there were no other options, lol).
They got him in quickly. He was running a very slight fever and was not happy about all the nurses touching him. We finally saw the doctor, who was very nice. She said his ear infection had spread to the other ear now, but there was still no puss which was a good sign. However, the cough meant he has croup, which is a common thing for little ones to get and there's not much they could do for him. So, they were able to give a breathing treatment which helped as well as a steroid shot to decrease the inflammation in his throat to make the breathing easier. I wasn't a fan of it, but he responded well to it. Well meaning after crying intensely when they sent the biggest, grizzly bear of a male nurse into give him the breathing treatment which scared the living crap out of him.
After being held in the ER to make sure of no bad side effects, we were released a little before 3am. This was also after Isaac puked all over the both of us after a hard coughing/crying fit. We got back to the hotel, got Isaac to sleep and then Luke and I barely slept at all, waking up anytime Isaac made a sound. We all got about another hour and a half of sleep before the little guy woke up again after choking on some fluid and cried to the point of unstoppable seal coughing again. It was one of the longest nights of my life.
SO, after that long night, I met up with Meghan and the women of the wedding party to have our hair and makeup done. I was an emotional wreck and felt terrible from only getting MAYBE 3 hours of sleep. I just needed some time to chill out and things were fine. The wedding was beautiful, Meghan was stunning, and we all had a great time. Isaac was even doing better!
Then the night hit... Saturday night was better then Friday night. We were able to get a little more sleep. I had Isaac in bed with me (we had a room with 2 queens, so Luke and I eat took one and traded off with the kiddo since he takes up more room than you'd think). He would wake up coughing but would go right back to sleep rather than crying like the night before. Then 4am hit and I woke up to him puking in the bed. That was awesome. All over him, monkey dude, the sheets, etc. I cleaned him up and we both moved to Luke's bed for a while until Isaac was just ready to get up and have a bath.
The steam from the bath helped his breathing, which was already much better than the day before. We decided to just get packed up and head home. Isaac slept in the car for the first 2 1/2 hours which he needed. We got home, he ate some lunch which was his first real food of the day since he wouldn't eat anything in the car, and then went down for a nap (which is going on 3 hours at the moment).
Needless to say, I'm taking him back to the pediatrician tomorrow to get her opinion and see if there is anything else I can do for him. It just came on SO quickly, I'm hoping it passes just as fast. I haven't been this exhausted since we had the little guy! Sheesh!
