We welcomed Isaac Andrew into the world on December 26th, 2008 at 8:19am.
My water broke Christmas morning a little after 10 am, while we were opening gifts at Luke's parent's house. We called the doctor and yes... we went to the hospital. Luke and I went back to our house to grab our bags and high-tailed it to the hospital. We got to the hospital around 11 and I was admitted and put in labor and delivery.
After getting checked out, I wasn't dilated very much (less than a centimeter) but those contractions were coming and my water had definitely broken. Because of the water breaking, I had to get the baby out within 24 hours to avoid infection. The doctor decided to put me on Pitocin to help the contractions along (they had been coming for a while, but we needed me to dilate faster). After 9 long hours of steadily increasing contractions (pain and frequency), I was still only a centimeter dilated. The nurse called my doctor and they let me get my epidural then even though I was less than 4 cm. 9 hours of that was enough.
They kept checking on me throughout the night. I was starting to dilate more but as my contractions because harder and faster, the Isaac's heart rate would drop. I would have to turn from one side to the other while the nurse drops my Pitocin. Isaac's heart rate returned to normal and they would turn the Pitocin back up... only to have his heart rate drop again. We went through this for hours.
After a long night of contractions, needles, check ups, throwing up (yep... way fun), and worrying about little Isaac and his well-being... my doctor was called in at 6 am Friday morning to talk about what we needed to do. Obviously, Isaac needed to come out by 10 am. I was only dilated to 4 cm after 20 hours of labor and he just didn't see how I could dilate to the full 10 cm in 4 more hours... so we scheduled the C-section for 8am that morning.
They came in and gave me a stronger epidural to get me ready for the section. The gave Luke his gown and wheeled me down the hall. After being in there for less than 10 minutes, we hear "It's a boy!" I look to my left and see my son, Isaac being weighed and measured. He's perfect.
After 22 hours of labor all ending up in a C-section, I have my baby boy. It was a scary and frustrating experience but Isaac makes the whole thing worth it. Now I'm just recouperating from the labor and delivery. Luke is wonderful and is doing everything that he can to help me. Anything from washing my hair to helping me roll over in bed.
My boys are incredible.
