With Ava well on her way to joining the family ranks, it was time for Isaac to make his move to his new room and "big boy bed." He'd been pretty reluctant to make the switch in the past on the couple occasions that we had tried, but Luke was sure he could help him make the transition. We were planning on making the change over 4th of July weekend, but Luke posed Isaac the option the weekend before just to see what would happen.
Isaac was in. He grabbed his blanket, "Baboon" (stuffed monkey) and marched his skinny behind right into the new bedroom and climbed up on his big bed. Luke read him a few books, had a nice little heart to heart about the big step he's making and told him how proud we were. Then, it was lights out.
The kiddo stayed in bed. No climbing down, no calling for us and he didn't even mess with the window that is right next to the bed. He rolled over and went to sleep. Amazing.
The next morning he woke up and stayed in his bed calling for us to come get him. Luke had told him to not get out of bed and Isaac took that to heart. We both went in and made sure he knew we were proud, he was a big boy and this new change was awesome. He seemed pretty proud of himself too.
That day, we made the official room swap. Anything that was Isaac's came out of the nursery and was put and organized in his new room. The crib was set back to "newborn" status, the mobile went back up, Ava's clothes went in the closet, etc. The nursery is now known as "Ava's Room." However, the change took Isaac a while to accept. He didn't really like the idea of losing HIS room, but with the new terminology, massive amounts of toys in HIS room and the constant reminders from Luke and I, he moved on. Plus, we surprised him with cool new decals on his walls after he spent a while with Mimi so we could get the final touches put on the rooms without a toddler under foot.
He's been in his new room for two weeks now. We've had a few issues with him getting out of bed when he's not supposed to or playing with the window curtains. However, with a simple request to him to not do that anymore, he usually stops. Sometimes he'll need another reminder, but for the most part, the switch has been a breeze. Trust me when I say I know how lucky we are. Isaac has always been a really obedient child.
The funniest thing is that he still hasn't figured out how to open his bedroom door from the inside of his room (and trust me, we aren't teaching him). So, when he wakes up in the morning and wants to come out, he gets out of bed and knocks at his bedroom door until one of us comes to open it. It's so funny!
